Caukie Vietnamese English
Dictionary
Download for iOS
and Android,
it’s free!
My Goal with Caukie is to create a Vietnamese English dictionary that
is practical, realistic and diverse. A dictionary that accepts all
Vietnamese words in use by anyone. Pre-existing Vietnamese dictionaries
(paper or app) are very exclusive, and tend to reject real words used by
real people (literally millions of people!!). This poses a huge barrier
for people learning Vietnamese to communicate with their friends,
neighbours and relatives. So, I guess, you could say that Caukie is a
Vietnamese dictionary aimed specifically at people learning
Vietnamese, people living in Vietnam or people with Vietnamese
family connections.

For some reason, Irish 🇮🇪
For some reason, I’ve been learning Irish. So, the app will also
feature an Irish English dictionary and other useful tools for that
too.
What’s done, what’s unique?
- A unique actual dictionary, featuring hand written entries that
cover language not covered by any other dictionaries, but I also include
copies of Wiktionary and other Vietnamese dictionaries too.
- A family calculator tool for figuring out what to call your
relatives, or your in-laws!
What’s planned?
Following is what I have planned in general for Caukie, and a more
granular todo list for my iOS and Android apps. Note that some of these
might never get done, and some of these might take years.
Caukie
There’s absolutely no timeline for these.
- Web browser with popover dictionary support
- Updates to make all apps more usable with accessibility
narrators
- VSL (Vietnamese Sign Language) dictionaries
- Search history
- Vast expansion of example sentences
- Flash card system
- ‘loanword’ pronunciation guesser
- ‘unused’ syllable generator (for people who want to invent new words
that aren’t an existing Vietnamese word, but can be pronounced using
pre-existing knowledge)
- Image support (for helping to define words where the English
equivalent isn’t well known)
- Highlight when search results are coming from a ‘variant’
lookup
- Add free ebooks, and other Vietnamese readings
- Add support for some kind of notation to lookup words with
diacritics on devices without vietnamese keyboards (like if you borrow
someone’s phone)
- Machine learning based diacritic restoration for sentences (honestly
this is mostly to help people understand the corporate SMSes that get
sent without any diacritics at all, or occasionally when older folk type
without diacritics)
- Finish family pronoun calculator database
- Improving sorting of search results based on commonality of use
- Record natural southern Vietnamese accented pronunciation of
words
- Automatically underline “low frequency/unimportant” words in books
that you can read past.
- Improve e-reader (saving, chapters, faster loading, etc.)
- Vocabulary tracker (roll it into flash card system?) for
highlighting in ebook reader
